Plenary Speaker: Sylvia Tamale

Sylvia TamaleimageSylvia Tamale is a feminist activist and academician based in Kampala, Uganda. She is an Associate Professor and currently the Dean of Law at Makerere University. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Makerere University, a Masters in Law from Harvard Law School and a PhD in Sociology (major) and Feminist Studies (minor) from the University of Minnesota. Sylvia founded and serves as coordinator of the Gender, Law & Sexuality Research Project at the Law Faculty. Her research interests include “Third World Women and the Law,” “Women and Politics” and “Gender, Identity and Sexuality.” Sylvia has won several awards for defending the human rights of marginalized groups such as women, gays & lesbians and refugees.
